You can easily create winter cat shelters at home for your outdoor cats or they are available for purchase at the Bonneville Humane Society, 444 N. Eastern Ave, Idaho Falls.
We are accepting donations of insulated coolers that we can convert into winter shelters for outdoor cats.
To build your own outdoor cat winter shelter, start with a Styrofoam shipping box and follow these tips:
Make the entrance hole approximately 6 inches in diameter and locate it several inches off the ground to keep out snow and rain.
Elevate the shelter box off the ground.
Line the bottom of the box with a piece of vinyl flooring.
Use straw as a bedding material inside because it repels moisture.
Slant the shelter box slightly to enable moisture runoff.
Place something heavy on the top of the shelter box to weigh it down and keep it in place.
Position the entrance away from the wind.
If you have two shelter boxes, face the entrances toward each other and place boards across box shelter boxes to weight them down and provide a protected entryway for the cats.
