Food - Staying warm during cold weather requires more energy, so your dog needs an increase in their daily amount of food.
Exercise and Attention - Your dog needs exercise, love and affection. Be sure to spend time with your dog every day.
Grooming - Matted hair does not insulate well. It exposes skin and chills your dog. Be sure your dog is brushed and groomed regularly.
Safety - Keep your dog safely in your fenced yard. Always walk your dog on a leash.
Shelter - Your dog needs a warm, dry house they can heat with their body heat. The dog house should have straw bedding and a wind barrier doorway. Access to your garage may keep your dog dry, but the garage is too big for the amount of body heat they can generate. Provide a dog house within the garage so your dog has a place they can stay warm. Remember to provide a moisture barrier and cold barrier under the floor of your dog's house. If you can't bring your dog inside the house with you during sub-zero weather, you may need to provide an additional heat source such as a light bulb inside your dog's house.
Water - Keep fresh water available for your dog at all times. During the winter this means your dog needs access to a source of running water or you will need to place a heater in the dog's water bowl to pervent the water from freezing.
